The signs that your boiler may need to be replaced.

1

Rising Energy Bills

Rising energy bills could be a sign of an inefficient boiler. When the heating system is old, it loses its efficiency.
2

Boiler Breakdowns

If you are encountering frequent boiler breakdowns, this could be a sign of potentially a much bigger problem.
3

Boiler Pressure

When a boiler is losing its pressure, this might be because of a leakage in the system.
4

Discontinued Parts

The parts of old boilers are usually hard to find. In some cases, they have discontinued.
5

Boiler Noises

If your boiler is making strange noises, like clunking, banging or whirring, these sounds should alarm you.
6

Yellow Flame

If the flame is yellow, this could be a problem. Yellow flame might be a sign that the boiler is leaking carbon monoxide.

Combi Boiler diagram

Combi Boiler

A Combination or ‘Combi’ boiler is both a high-efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler in a single compact unit. Combi boilers heat water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap, so you won’t need a hot water storage cylinder or a cold water storage tank in the roof space.

  • Compact sizes make combi boilers perfect for smaller properties
  • Ideal where there is little or no loft space
  • No need for a hot water cylinder allows increased living space
  • No cold water storage tank frees up a loft for conversion
  • No risk of loft pipework freezing
  • Less pipework in the home makes installation typically cheaper

Regular Boiler

Regular boilers (sometimes known as traditional, conventional, heat only or back boilers) are ideally suited to homes that already have a traditional heating and hot water system which is linked to a separate hot water cylinder. These boilers also need a cold water storage tank in the loft to feed the hot water cylinder as well as a tank that maintains the water level of the central heating system.

Detailed below are the benefits:

  •  They have a straightforward design with fewer complex components, which can contribute to fewer breakdowns.
  •  Often compatible with older heating systems, making them a suitable choice for homes with existing infrastructure designed for traditional heating systems.
  • Can provide a high volume of hot water to multiple outlets simultaneously.
  •  Can be installed in various locations, including airing cupboards and loft spaces.

System Boiler

A system boiler is a type of central heating boiler that works in conjunction with a sealed hot water cylinder and a set of radiators to efficiently provide heating and hot water to a home. Unlike conventional boilers, system boilers incorporate most of the essential components, such as the pump and expansion vessel, within the unit itself. This compact design simplifies installation and reduces the need for additional external components.

The benefits are detailed below:

  • System boilers are known for their high energy efficiency.
  • As most components are built into the boiler unit itself, system boilers are more compact compared to traditional boilers, making them suitable for homes with limited space.

  • The integrated design simplifies the installation process.
  • System boilers are equipped with a sealed hot water cylinder, ensuring a readily available and consistent supply of hot water to multiple outlets simultaneously.
